Information about Isla Mujeres Isla Mujeres remains one the truly unspoiled spots in México. Easily accessible from Cancún International Airport and only a short boat ride across the Bay of Mujeres from Puerto Juarez, the island is a tranquil world of white sand beaches, ringed by palm trees and bordering on crystal clear turquoise water, perfect for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. Isla Mujeres is only 5 miles long and 1/2 mile wide and it is easy to get around, offering a variety of delights to all visitors. The best beaches are on the north and west sides of the island, where the water is shallow and calm and the white coral sand feels cool on the feet. The North Beach is the island’s most famous and popular, with restaurants and bars where you can enjoy everything from a tall drink to the freshest of seafood. Lounges are available for sunbathing and water sports equipment such as kayaks, water bicycles and sailboards, can be rented. Most of the non-beach activity on the island is centered on the Town Square or “zocalo”, just a few blocks from the docks used by the ferryboats. Locals and visitors gather here to discuss the events of the day, watch a basketball game or participate in some of the many fiestas that are celebrated on the island. It is a great place to make new friends or just to “people watch” in the light breezes of the tropical evenings. From the zocalo a stroll down Hidalgo, the main street, will bring you to shops featuring typical Mexican Handcrafts and restaurants serving a variety of cuisines, including Cuban, Thai, Italian, fresh seafood and of course, traditional Mayan and Yucatecan dishes. Open-air bars offer the opportunity to enjoy your favorite beverage in a relaxing atmosphere. On the east coast you will find rocky shores great for tide-pooling and watching the waves of the open Caribbean Sea. On the south end of the island is Garrafon National Park, an area with a reef accessible directly from land and with schools of colorful fish, which can be seen by snorkeling, kayaking or boogie boarding. Once a temple devoted to Ixchel, the Mayan Goddess of Women, stood on the shore where the sun first rises on México. |
