Destination Weddings on Isla Mujeres If your dream wedding includes a soft white sand beach on a tiny tropical island under a clear blue sky with a turquoise sea in the background, then you need search no further: Isla Mujeres has everything your heart desires and more. Over the past decade destination weddings have increased 200% with about ten percent of American couples now choosing to be married somewhere other than their home towns. Isla Mujeres has become a popular wedding site as more and more couples are discovering the many possibilities for a romantic and intimate wedding on the island. The same qualities that attract tourists to Isla Mujeres also attract couples who want an event which suits their personal style as well as taking advantage of the island’s natural beauty, and which also costs far less then other Caribbean destinations. Isla Mujeres is a small island with many small hotels where couples and their guests receive personalized attention, allowing for more private settings for wedding. If you cannot come to the island before your wedding, you can use the internet to chose a hotel and a wedding coordinator. Many hotels offer packages that can be tailored to your wishes and your budget. Wedding planners on the island can arrange everything for you and offer convenience and value, important when you are hundreds of miles away and do not speak Spanish. Wedding planners know the island and the places that best suit each couple’s wishes. Some like the simple, casual style of the Caribbean and prefer a barefoot wedding on the beach while others choose a more formal type of wedding using the sea as a background. Weddings can be held on private docks so that vows are made standing over the crystal clear water of Isla Mujeres Bay. The spectacular sunsets on Isla Mujeres create a dramatic background with vivid pink, orange and purple skies against the turquoise blue of the sea. Whatever your dream, your island wedding planner can work out the details with you via the internet. Your first choice is whether to have a legal or a spiritual ceremony. In Mexico the only legal ceremony is a civil one. This involves getting translations of documents into Spanish before your arrival on the island. The Mexican authorities will issue a marriage license and the couple must take a blood test 48 hours before the ceremony. The ceremony is in Spanish only so you might want a translator-a friend or someone on the island who can provide a translation. About thirty percent of the weddings on Isla Mujeres are legal ceremonies. The majority of couples married on Isla Mujeres choose a spiritual ceremony after having the legal ceremony done in their home state. You can bring your own minister to perform the ceremony, engage an English-speaking lay person who specializes in creating and performing meaningful ceremonies or you can even have a dear friend preside over a ceremony where the bride and groom exchange the vows they have written themselves. This type of ceremony is also popular with couples renewing their vows and with same sex couples seeking a commitment ceremony. Isla Mujeres is easily accessible by air with a choice of daily flights and reasonable fares to Cancun, the number one tourist destination in Mexico. Guests will welcome the chance to combine your wedding with a great vacation in Mexico! And the couple will already be in the perfect place for a luxurious Caribbean Honeymoon. |

The Ceremony:
There are two ways to do this, one legal and one not legal. If you want a formal, legal civil ceremony in Mexico the bride and groom and the two witnesses required must have translations of passports done by a translator authorized to do this. The names of authorized translators are available from the Mexican Consulate Office nearest you. You must fill out more papers when you get to Mexico and you must have a blood test done here at least 48 hours before the wedding. The civil officials here will do the ceremony wherever you’d like. The cost is $250.00 to $300.00, depending on the time of day and location.
Many couples prefer to have the civil ceremony done in their home country and have a spiritual ceremony here, one which has no legal standing. Sabina Tamm, who lives here on Isla Mujeres, will work with you to write the ceremony as you would like it and then will perform it at the location you choose. Her rate is $200.00 and you can reach her by Email at sabina@sundreamers.com
You can choose to have the ceremony on the North Beach which is just a block from the hotel. You can expect to gather a crowd there as it is the center of activity on the island until sunset. You can also have it on the beach across the street from the hotel which is more family-oriented and quieter. The hotel has decorations available for this, an arch which can be decorated with flowers, chairs, torches, a table, candles, etc. They can make an aisle of palm fronds and flowers and for one wedding, the bride arrived by boat onto the beach and came down the aisle to the place of the wedding. Other people choose more remote and quiet locations such as Mar y Sol which is about 2.5 miles south of the downtown area or Zama’s Beach Club on Sac Bajo, the peninsula which runs along the west (sunset) side of the island.
The Wedding Dinner:
The wedding dinner can be held in the restaurant of the hotel which overlooks the beach or in the pool/palapa area of the hotel. Dinners run from $37.00 to $65.00 per person plus tax and tip. It is traditional to serve two main courses here so the lower rates would be for chicken and fish, the higher rates for shrimp, lobster and steak. This is the rate for a complete dinner including appetizers, salads, the main dishes chosen and side dishes.
Beverages can be handled two ways: you can have beer and national drinks at a 2 for 1 rate and a tab is kept for the group. Or you can pay a flat rate for two hours at $22.00 per person, plus tax and tip.
The wedding area can be decorated with fabric, flowers, centerpieces for the tables, etc. The costs for decorations usually runs from $300.00 to $600.00. The staff of the hotel is very creative and can work with any theme you might have in mind.
